What does the course title mean in Canvas?
The titles of your course are named to include certain information about your course. It will include the subject, course number, course reference number (CRN), the modality, and the name of the course:

You may also see a shortened version of this in certain places in Canvas:

Subject:
The subject is the category the course is under. For example, the course HIST175 is under the subject of History.
Course Number
The course number relates to the subject matter of that course. While you may know that HIST175 is a History course, the 175 part relates to a specific topic: U.S. History Since 1876.
Course Reference Number (CRN)
These are unique to each course and are also referred to sections. The CRN indicates the specific section of the course that you're enrolled in. There may be many sections of History 175, but you could be enrolled into CRN 93361
Modality
The modality is how the course is offered. There are a number of different options but the most common are Online, Face to Face (on-site) and Hybrid. A complete list of the modality abbreviations is provided here:
ONL: Online
HYB: Hybrid
F2F: Face to Face (in person, classroom, or onsite such as lecture or lab).
ALT: Alternate format (all others such as Telecourse, Independent Study, Cable, and Work Study)
Name of the Course
The name briefly describes the specific subject matter for that particular course number. For example, History 175 is U.S. History Since 1876.
