Pace+ | How to Record and Submit Video Assignments in Canvas
To submit video assignments in Canvas, you will use Studio, a video recording and hosting application built into Canvas. There is a two-step process:
- Create a Video in Studio
- If Needed: Edit Your Video
- Submit Your Video to the Assignment
1. Create a Video in Studio
To access Studio, log into your Canvas account and select the button in the left-hand Global Navigation Menu:
Studio has a few different options depending on what you need to do:
A. To record a webcam video, use Studio Capture
B. To record your screen (and webcam, such as for presentations), use Screencast-o-Matic/ScreenPal
C. To record your video elsewhere and bring it into Studio, use Add Media
To do any of these in Studio, select the Create button in the top-right corner, then your desired option:
Specific instructions for each option and additional resources are located below.
Option A: Record a webcam video
- In Canvas Studio, select Create, then Studio Capture to launch the recorder
- ⚠️ The first time you use it, you may be prompted to download the Screen Recorder Launcher. Follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
- Adjust the webcam and microphone options. There is a Screen Capture option, but it is not recommended (as of June '25). Once ready, select Start Recording [labeled 1 in the screenshot], wait for the count-down and record your video:
- You can select Pause [2] or Finish [3] to end the recording session:
- Select Play [4] to review your recording. You’ll have the opportunity to make minor edits the video later. Give the video a Title [5], and then add it to your video library with Save Media [6].

Option B: Record your screen (and webcam)
If making a presentation with webcam video, it is possible to record only the portion of your screen with slides. Then, you can have speaker notes below your webcam, making it easier to present directly to the viewers.
- In Canvas Studio, select Create, then Screencast-o-Matic/ScreenPal to launch the recorder
- ⚠️ The first time you use it, you may be prompted to download the software. Follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
- Drag the corners of the recording box [1] over your presentation window. Drag the webcam window [2] into an unused corner of your presentation.
- In the Record window, set the recording for screen, webcam or both [3]. Make sure the video resolution is sufficient in Size [4]. Check your microphone by speaking and looking for green bars in Narration [5]. When ready, select Rec [6]:
- Record your presentation. Once you are finished recording, select Done.
- Give your presentation a Title, then select Upload.
- After the upload completes, select Continue. You can now see the recording in Studio!

Option C: Record your video elsewhere
You may wish to use other tools, such as PowerPoint or Prezi, to record your video. These tools have built-in teleprompters so that you can easily refer to your speaker notes. If doing this, please download the video in a supported file format such as .mp4, then use these steps.
- In Canvas Studio, select Create, then Add Media
- Select Browse Files to upload the file. You do not need to use any outside programs such as YouTube or Vimeo.

If Needed: Edit Your Video
Studio allows for basic editing of the video. If you can’t get your phrasing right or need to repeat yourself during the recording, go ahead and then you can cut out certain portions of the video. To edit:
- Select the three-dot menu [7], and then Edit Media [8]:
- Once editing the video, you can cut [9] and trim [10] your video to your liking. If needed, you can undo or redo edits [11]:
- While cutting or trimming, click and drag the edge of the selector [12] to choose what you’d like removed. Once done with a cut or trim, you can discard or confirm [13].
- After you’re finished making all your edits, you can save [14], or cancel to revert all changes:

2. Submit Your Video

- Go to the submission window for the assignment and select Start Assignment [15]:
- Go down to the text entry box. You might need to hit the three-dot button [16] to show all of the tools:
- Select the plug icon [17] and choose Canvas Studio [18]. If you don’t see it, select View All [19]:
- This will take you to your library of uploaded videos. Select your video [20] in the library that you want to submit:
- Select Embed Media [21]:
- It will take a second to load, but a thumbnail image of your video will show in the text entry box. Finally, select Submit Assignment [22]:
- You should see confetti🎊 indicating the submission was successful!
